Project SEARCH: Empowering Futures at Hanover & District Hospital
Transforming Lives through Real-World Experience
Project SEARCH is a unique, 10-month transition-to-work program designed for students with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Launching in September 2025 at the Hanover & District Hospital (HDH), this program provides an authentic work environment where interns gain the skills necessary to secure competitive employment.
Our Mission and Philosophy
Grounding our work in Christ-centered values, BGCDSB recognizes the God-given potential in every individual. Project SEARCH upholds the right of all students to learn and grow in an inclusive environment that celebrates unique gifts and fosters a deep sense of belonging.
Program Overview
The program is a collaborative effort between BGCDSB and Hanover & District Hospital, focusing on enhancing skill sets through high-quality care experiences.
- Intake: 5 interns (students) per year.
- Support Team: Includes one BGCDSB teacher (Instructor) and one Skills Trainer.
- Location: Internships take place entirely at Hanover & District Hospital.
- Transportation: Provided for all participating students.
The Internship Journey
Interns cycle through three distinct rotations at the hospital, allowing for career exploration and employability skills acquisition.

A Day in the Life of an Intern
During internship weeks, students balance classroom learning with hands-on work:
- 9:00 am – 10:00 am: Employability Skills Curriculum
- 10:00 am – 2:30 pm: Hands-on Internship (including lunch)
- 2:30 pm – 3:00 pm: Classroom reflection and planning for the next day
Eligibility and Application
We are looking for motivated students in their final year of high school who are ready to enter the workforce immediately after graduation.
Candidate Requirements:
- Diagnosed with an intellectual and/or developmental disability.
- Working toward a certificate or diploma.
- Seeking competitive employment in the community.

- Skills Assessment Day: Eligible candidates will be invited to the hospital to perform tasks mirroring real internship skills (e.g., portering, assembling kits).
- Selection: A committee of partners will review applications based on a rubric and interview results.
Beyond Graduation
Our commitment doesn't end when the school year does. For one year after graduation, students are supported by a team to help them obtain, maintain, and grow within quality employment in their community.
