February 11, 2020

Dear Parents / Guardians:

The Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board has received notice from our teacher union (OECTA), that they will be enhancing their administrative job action starting on Tuesday, February 11th, 2020. These additional job actions will have an impact on school operations, in particular, the ability to run some of our system events and large scale field trips that require the use of Occasional teachers and adjustments to daily schedules.

These job actions now require us to re-evaluate our plans and activities in both our Secondary and Elementary schools. Complicating this issue is a province wide shortage of available occasional staff to cover vacancies. As such, we are having to postpone some events and field trips that require significant occasional teachers and Principal / Vice Principal participation.

At this time the BGCDSB chess tournament that was scheduled for this Thursday February 13th at St. Teresa Catholic Elementary School in Walkerton is postponed and will be rescheduled to a later date this school year. Ski trips at various elementary schools are also being postponed with hopes of rescheduling them before the end of the ski season.

We sincerely hope and pray for a fair and just resolution to this provincial labour dispute and are grateful for your understanding.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR PARENTS DURING THE LABOUR DISRUPTION

The Ministry of Education announced that it is launching Support for Parents, an initiative that will provide financial support to parents of eligible children for each day of school that is missed on account of the labour disruption. Parents with children attending school-based childcare centres that are closed on account of the labour disruption will also be eligible to receive support. Parents will be able, and strongly encouraged, to submit applications via an online system.

The system is open as of yesterday, January 15, and will remain so until four weeks after the labour disruption ends. In an effort to accommodate those who may be unable to submit online from home, parents will be able to have access to a computer or to paper copies of the application at the Catholic Education Centre in Hanover or at your school site.

The application form and website contains all the information parents will need to apply for the Support for Parents funding, including mailing instructions. Please check the ministry’s website at: www.Ontario.ca/SupportForParents for application details or the dedicated Support for Parents Helpline at 1-888-444-3770 for additional information.
